Customer Feedback Leads to Usability Improvements, Platform Enhancements

enhancement request process for targetsolutions

TargetSolutions has released numerous enhancements in 2017 and more are on the way. Download this infographic to learn about the enhancement request process.

TargetSolutions is striving to create the most user-friendly, intuitive training management system possible. That’s why customer feedback, delivered through the Enhancement Request form, is so valuable (download PDF to learn how the process works).

targetsolutions platform enhancementsSo far this year, TargetSolutions has knocked out nearly a dozen projects requested by customers. One of the most recent enhancements, the File Center Resource Wizard, improves usability by creating a bridge between three of the platform’s most powerful applications: the File Center, Activities Builder and Create New Assignments.

This new tool provides powerful functionality designed to reduce clicks, streamline processes, and improve feature interoperability.

Platform managers can now upload a file to the File Center, use the Resource Wizard to create an activity directly from the file upload tool, and either edit the activity in Activities Builder or assign it through Create New Assignment.

“This release was another step toward reducing clicks and streamlining processes,” said Senior Product Manager Misty Pratt. “With platform managers’ efficiency in mind, we’ve more closely aligned uploaded files, assignments, and activities with the new File Center Resource Wizard.”

Customer feedback is critical for continuously improving the platform. That’s why TargetSolutions employs an Enhancement Request process that allows the TargetSolutions team to capture details about specific applications, identify similar requests, and provide a foundation for decision-making on which features to build next.

TargetSolutions aims to release 4-8 enhancements per quarter, dependent on development scope and impact.  Several factors are considered when deciding which enhancements to build, including the number of requests for the feature, impact on client base, fit with current business model, and development impact.

“We value customer feedback and make every effort to use it to continually evolve our product. Through the Enhancement Request process, customers are able to help shape the future of TargetSolutions.”

Jennifer Jones, Director of Product & User Experience, TargetSolutions.

Listed below are the various projects requested by customers that were implemented in 2017 to boost overall efficiency:

California JAC Solution: Implemented the Reimbursement Status category that provides better visibility and prevents double-dipping.

Delete Self-Assigned Activity: Any assignment started through the Self Assign feature can be deleted from My Assignments.

Full SSL/TSL Solution: All clients will access the site through an SSL/TLS connection (meaning clients can access their site URL with https://).

Add Activity to Credential Topic from Activity Setting: New activity setting allows platform managers to add activities to credential topics when creating or editing activities.

File Center – Improved Search Functionality: A series of updates, including folder name searches, added search functionality to the enterprise tab of the child site, as well as the ability to view file breadcrumbs of search results.

Changed Downloaded File Names: Downloaded file name reflects the name of the file in TargetSolutions, rather than a string of letters.

Improved Enterprise/Child Representation for Files: Enterprise folders feature same permission structure that is available on child sites.

Mass Managing Activities: Eliminates cumbersome one-at-a-time updating for activities; allows platform managers to mass manage settings, mass archive, and mass delete.

Archiving Activities: Gives platform managers an alternative to deleting activities, allowing them to keep their activities organized without compromising completion reports.

Upload New File Versions: Allows platform managers to upload a new version of existing files in the File Center and automatically update any activities to which the file is attached without affecting previous completions of those activities.

Upgraded Events Manager: Usability tweaks and design overhaul including some added functionality.

Here are a couple of enhancements the TargetSolutions team is currently working on:

Activities Resource Component Upgrade: With a single resource component, you will be able to add multiple File Center files or files directly from your computer to activities. Instructional settings and e-signature options will be customizable per file. We will also be adding File Center search functionality to the component, as well as the ability to add files from your computer to File Center directly from the component.

Multiple Day Duration Component in Activities Builder: Adding this new component will allow a user to complete an activity one time and generate multiple completion records for multiple days. For instance, a user could opt to split a 40-hour course completion record equally over five days; a single submission creating five identical eight-hour completion records for the designated days.

TargetSolutions’ Top 6 Courses for National Preparedness Month 2017

To commemorate National Preparedness Month 2017, TargetSolutions has selected our Top 6 training courses to help organizations establish an emergency response plan.

According to FEMA’s Citizen Preparedness Survey, less than one in three employed U.S. adults believe their workplace is proactive about emergency preparedness. As September is National Preparedness Month 2017, now is the time to develop an effective disaster response procedure to protect your organization.

Each week this month focuses on methods to build your emergency response plan:

Week 1 (September 1-9): Make a Plan for Yourself, Family and Friend

Week 2 (September 10-16): Plan to Help Your Neighbor and Community

Week 3 (September 17-23): Practice and Build Out Your Plans

Week 4 (September 24-30): Get Involved! Be a Part of Something Larger

To help organizations implement an emergency response plan, TargetSolutions has selected our Top 6 courses for National Preparedness Month 2017:

Building Evacuation and Emergencies provides building occupants with information about emergency response plans to ensure the safe, orderly and prompt evacuation of individuals.

Disaster Preparedness discusses how to plan for emergencies for all sectors of society – service providers, businesses, civic and volunteer groups, industry associations and neighborhood associations – and includes the responsibilities of law enforcement personnel in disaster preparedness and response.

Emergency Action Plan gives you a look at how to prepare an Emergency Action Plan for businesses and includes how to integrate required OSHA regulations into the plan.

Hazard Communication covers OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) National Preparedness Month 2017to ensure the communication of the dangers of the thousands of hazardous chemicals to workers and their employers. This includes a hazard communication program to get this information to their employees through labels on containers, SDSs, and training.

Emergency Response to Terrorism is an introductory guide for first responders who may be among the first to arrive at an incident of suspicious origin. It is intended to be a general introduction to the basic concepts for first-responder awareness at the scene of a potential terrorist incident.

NFPA 1021: Pre-Incident Planning recognizes that protecting a community from fires and other emergency incidents requires more than merely responding to the alarm. This course reviews the concept of pre-incident planning and discusses the primary elements of pre-incident planning, including gathering information (i.e., performing the property survey), recording that information, and using that information effectively.

While you can’t predict when disaster will strike, you can be ready for when it does. The goal of National Preparedness Month 2017 is to engage communities across the country to create emergency preparedness plans for the home, work, school, and places of worship. TargetSolutions’ comprehensive training catalog assists organizations in developing a disaster preparedness plan that reduces liability and potentially saves lives.

New Upgrades to Manage Events Application Simplify Event Planning for Public Entities

TargetSolutions makes continuous platform enhancements to improve the user experience. The latest upgrades streamline event planning for public entities.

TargetSolutions is the leading computer-based system for all facets of training management and your feedback is crucial in our efforts to improve the platform. The latest enhancements modernize the Events application with a more user-friendly design and greater functionality.

New upgrades to the Events application include the following:

• Manage Events in the Administration Section
• Search Bar and Sorting Functionality
• Supervisor Rights for Platform Managers for Event Management
• Improved Enrollment and Attendance Records

event planning for public entitiesMore Convenience for Platform Managers
Manage Events in the Administration section significantly improves the application’s usability for creating and organizing events. Now, rather than having to switch between the Home and Administration tab, administrators can oversee events from the same platform page they use to coordinate training courses and activities.

Greater Search and Sorting Capabilities
The new search bar and sorting functionality will save you time by simplifying navigation between current and past events. Users and platform managers can find a specific event by searching for its name or sorting the table values in the event list according to a category – such as a date or location.

Distribute Responsibility to Streamline Management
Supervisor rights grant event editing abilities to individuals, other than the original event creator. With access to these new rights, multiple platform managers can edit event details such as attendee enrollment, recording attendance and canceling an event. Enabling supervisor rights for several people distributes responsibility to streamline adjustments for easy event planning for public entities.

Using the new Event History, you can oversee these changes and track who edited information and when the edits were made.

Easily Access Event Registration Information
In addition to simplifying event creation, approving or denying attendee enrollment is now painless with the ability to approve or deny multiple attendees at once. This usability upgrade makes the enrollment approval functionality more practical and efficient.

Attendee information also provides valuable data for compliance purposes. Once at the event, training officers can take attendance and view the attendance record in My History and completions reports.

“Enhancements to TargetSolutions’ Events application make creating, managing and reporting events easier for organizing hands-on training or event planning for public entities. You can now manage all event communication and report attendance with TargetSolutions’ all-in-one training management system.”

Misty Pratt, Product Manager, TargetSolutions

TargetSolutions Sponsors New Webinar Highlighting the Traits of Effective Leadership

Fire Service Leadership

The new TargetSolutions-sponsored webinar “Step Up and Lead” features Deputy Chief Frank Viscuso discussing effective fire service leadership characteristics and how they can shape you and your employees for the better.

Packed with firsthand knowledge for capturing the essence of what makes a strong leader, the brand new TargetSolutions-sponsored webinar “Step Up and Lead” is one you don’t want to miss.

Presented by Deputy Chief Frank Viscuso of the Kearny (NJ) Fire Department, the 73-minute webinar dives into the fundamentals of effective leadership and demonstrates how to apply those characteristics to the fire service. Quality leadership extends beyond mere occupational titles and instead roots itself deep into twelve specific character attributes, which Viscuso outlines as the acronym L.E.A.D.E.R.S. T.E.A.C.H.: Loyal, Educated, Adaptable, Determined, Enthusiastic, Reliable, Selfless, Tough, Empathetic, Assertive, Courageous, Honorable.Fire Service Leadership

From there, Viscuso infuses the presentation with firsthand accounts of a career spanning 26 years which serves as his inspiration for developing future leaders. Leadership 101 doesn’t start with a digital thesaurus of proverbial terms and phrases; instead, it starts from within, where it takes a positive can-do approach and an open mind to sufficiently harness the proper growth and development of your battalion. A leader will find a way to make it happen and sometimes it’s as simple as creating something out of nothing.

“We have to have the mentality of finding a way or making one,” commented Viscuso. “If you can’t lead yourself then you’ll never lead other people.”

Adorned with engaging illustrations, Viscuso dissects each of the twelve characteristics as they pertain to the fire service leadership and life in general. Most importantly, strong leadership is about adapting to new situations and setting your people up for success.

“My strategy was to put the right person in the right position and get out of their way,” stated Viscuso. “There’s something to say about finding what people are good at and putting them in the right position so you can have the most effective, efficient team possible.”

Top 5 Fire Training Scenarios for the Effective Firefighter

Running specific fire training scenarios at your training complex will boost confidence, expand knowledge, and promote valuable teamwork when prepping your cadre for the real thing.

An ongoing debate endures over whether money buys championships, a concept that can be applied to many of life’s little nuances. But the reality is what good is having the best that money can buy if you’re not prepared to properly use it? The same could be said for a firefighter’s training program. Your training grounds may be packed with the most pristine resources available, but like a last-place ball club with a skyrocketing payroll, your gear is only as good as the plan you develop for using it.

Scenario-based training for firefighters is a must for preparing your battalion, executing successful operations, and saving lives. Paul Costello, FF/EMT-P and certified fire service instructor, recently sat down with us to discuss a few fire training scenarios that can help prepare your cadre for the real thing.

1) EMS Training: Commonly known as one of the Toxic Twins, hydrogen cyanide is a chemical compound found in most working fires that effectively blocks the body’s cells from accepting oxygen. Implementing EMS into your program is one of the most valuable types of fire training scenarios that will prepare your battalion for tackling chemical inhalation, injuries, burn wounds and more. Costello discusses this further while referencing cardiovascular incidents leading to line of duty deaths; “Cyanide and its other twin carbon monoxide become a cardiovascular drag. If you already have a degree of heart disease that you didn’t realize, now you’re suddenly further impairing it, which is one of the known triggers of these line of duty cardiac arrests that occur during or after a fire.”

2) SCBA & PPE: Complacency is an all too familiar foe when it comes to reviewing and mastering the basics. How to don your gear with speed, the rules of air management, knowing how much air your body expends, and when to remove yourself from a fire are all fundamental necessities that every firefighter must review with a degree of regularity. “Regardless of discipline, going back to the basics is imperative and the fundamental knowledge could use a boosting from time to time,” commented Costello.

3) Truck Company Operations: Truck company operations are vital to any firefighting effort. Aerials and master streams, operated by specialists called “truckies,” offer the opportunity to maintain strategic holds on building fires and provide incident command with succinct control of the flow path into the structure through their ventilation efforts. It comes down to skillset, orders from incident command, and not getting trigger happy with those 1,000 GPM master streams. Said Costello, “One alarm fire means you’re going to have X amount of engines, we’ll say three; a truck company, aerial or ladder, rescue, battalion chief or two, an air truck. Everything complements one another.”

4) Live Fire Training & Flashover Simulator: Whether it’s live fire evolutions in the tower, a burn room or a flashover simulator, all three scenarios serve the invaluable purpose of prepping firefighters for the real thing. Thermal dynamics, fire behavior, reading and controlling a fire are all beneficial for rookie firefighters and veterans alike. When structures start to burn at 1,100 degrees and you’re surrounded by super-heated gas, relying on your training could save your life. Relayed Costello, “What it does is prepare the firefighter for the behavioral nuances experienced inside a burning structure. Adult learners master by doing, actually seeing that things are improving or getting worse and if they’re getting worse, what can they do?”

5) Tower Training: Physical agility, simulated high-rise drills, and live fire evolutions are just a few of the training exercises that towers provide. Each building takes on its own personality and unique architecture in providing important training exercises to battalions across the country. The ultimate game changer, Costello praised tower training for its versatility and value; “For the average firefighter who isn’t part of a specialized team doing high angle rescue, it’s a confidence builder in trusting your equipment and team and the basics of why we do this type of safety training.”

TargetSolutions offers a variety of interactive online training courses of the aforementioned fire training scenarios, plus a plethora of other topics. Manage your entire department’s training, simplify ISO, and stay on top of EMS recertification all from one centralized hub. For more information, please contact us today at (800) 840-8048.
