SAN DIEGO –TargetSolutions, a Vector Solutions brand offering the leading online training and records management system for public safety agencies, announced today an all-new training course, “NFPA® 1851 – Cancer-Related Risks of Firefighting,” will be released April 23, the first day of FDIC International 2018.

The video-based training guided by the NFPA’s 1851 Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting, aims to provide a thorough understanding of fire service-related cancer risks for today’s firefighters. The two-hour course features real-life scenarios, engaging interactions, and 13 learning modules for departments to educate personnel on the dangers facing firefighters and what actions they can take to reduce risk.

targetsolutions platform enhancements“TargetSolutions recognizes just how serious of an issue this is for today’s fire service,” said Marc Scheipe, who serves as executive vice president for Vector Solutions’ public sector business unit. “With that understanding comes a responsibility to create training courses that can make a difference. This course outlines the importance of care and cleaning for turnout gear, how to maintain and inspect PPE (personal protective equipment), and best practices for decontamination, isolation, and reporting of equipment-related issues. The course goes a long way to educate fire service members on how they can mitigate risk.”

In addition to a thorough review of proper PPE management, the course interprets key terminology related to the NFPA 1851 standard, explains how protective ensembles interface with bodily organs and the lymphatic system, and presents eight of the most common carcinogens a firefighter may face in today’s homes.

“NFPA 1851 – Cancer-Related Risks of Firefighting” will be on display at booth No. 13034 during FDIC’s exhibit hours, which begin Thursday, April 26 and runs through Saturday, April 28 at the annual conference in Indianapolis.

TargetSolutions will also be demonstrating an exciting new web-based application during FDIC. TargetSolutions Check It™ operations management software is built to simplify routine maintenance inspections of trucks, tools, medical supplies, drugs, and other items logged in inventory records. Thousands of agencies already manage training and compliance with TargetSolutions’ unrivaled technology platform. Now, that innovation extends to a mobile device for truck and equipment inspections.

“With TargetSolutions Check It, routine checks are simplified, and the data is easily accessible through the TargetSolutions platform,” said Scheipe. “TargetSolutions Check It gives Fire and EMS agencies insight into their inventory so that they can spot issues in real time. This is the kind of technology TargetSolutions strives to deliver because it makes agencies more efficient and effective.”

TargetSolutions will also present this new functionality in FDIC’s 2018 Emerging Technologies Summit and Pavilion, which is focused on advancing technology in the fire service. TargetSolutions will discuss its latest innovations, including virtual reality training capabilities, in the 500 Ballroom during the event scheduled to run Wednesday, April 25 through Friday, April 27.

TargetSolutions Gives Thanks to Customers During Networking & Training Workshop in San Diego

TargetSolutions Presents Prestigious Helping Hand Awards to David Piper (Orland Fire Protection District, Ill.) and Steve Malone (Manhattan Fire Department, Ill.)

SAN DIEGO – TargetSolutions, a Vector Solutions brand offering the leading online training and records management system for public safety agencies, hosted its Networking & Training Workshop on Tuesday at Firehouse World in San Diego.

Attendees from across the country gathered at the Marriott Gaslamp Quarter’s Altitude Sky Lounge to receive platform utilization tips, network with other platform managers, and learn what TargetSolutions has in store for 2018 and beyond. TargetSolutions announced its newest product, TargetSolutions Check It, which is built to track equipment and fire apparatus inspections on a mobile device. The mighty application will be available in April.

Executive Vice President Marc Scheipe addressed attendees, thanking them for their tremendous contributions to TargetSolutions over the years. Scheipe joined the company in September of 2017 and has been impressed by the level of engagement and feedback TargetSolutions receives from its customers.

“One of the things I’ve been struck by is not only the great team I have but more so than anything the great customers we have,” Scheipe said. “It’s more than customers, you’re partners in everything we do and oftentimes on the same side of the table helping us figure out how to make the platform work better and what content to add. It’s just been my privilege to get to know all of you and my team.”

One of the afternoon’s highlights was the awards presentation in which TargetSolutions recognized several platform managers for their tremendous dedication to delivering outstanding fire department training.

The Helping Hand Awards

What Lieutenant David Piper of Orland Fire Protection District (Ill.) and Deputy Chief Steve Malone of Manhattan Fire Department (Ill.) have accomplished together with the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) in Illinois is nothing short of remarkable. The duo has teamed up to assist more than 150 neighboring departments in the state with the implementation of the TargetSolutions platform, Piper said.

In fact, the duo worked together to develop annual training trackers customized for the state of Illinois. Together they have established an innovative “Three-Year Plan” for Illinois, which breaks down the state’s requirements into three-year chunks. Piper and Malone have been leaders with the MABAS enterprise site, which is growing in the region. For this incredible commitment to firefighter training, they received the honorable award for going above and beyond to assist other agencies.

“This has been a team effort,” said Piper, whose department first signed on with TargetSolutions in 2009. “Collectively we have worked together to share ideas on how to train. I was one of the first people in my state to use TargetSolutions and I learned a lot and have shared what I have learned.”

Said Malone: “We’ve worked to help company officers and help the fire service (with TargetSolutions). TargetSolutions has helped us deliver a training program and implement it into our departments.”

From left to right, TargetSolutions’ Regional Sales Manager David Farrar, Orland Fire Protection District’s David Piper, TargetSolutions’ Account Manager Julie Blosch, and Manhattan Fire Department’s Steve Malone gathered for a picture on March 6 during the Networking & Training Workshop in San Diego. Piper and Malone were honored with the Helping Hand Award, given each year to a person or persons who go above and beyond to assist other agencies with fire department training.

The Vanguard Award

The Vanguard Award goes each year to someone who exemplifies dedication in the delivery of fire department training and this year’s recipient is Captain Rob Kandle of the Kennewick Fire Department (Wash.). Kandle is maximizing his department’s training program through TargetSolutions.

“I want to thank TargetSolutions for naming me the Vanguard Award winner,” said Kandle, who was not in attendance but recorded his comment in a video. “TargetSolutions has been a great addition in helping us accomplish a number of things that our previous records management system was struggling to do. It’s been a successful partnership with TargetSolutions and we look forward to partnering with them in the future.”

The Technology Achievement Award

Having a forward-thinking mindset is critical for fire department training leaders. Captain Kevin Platt of the Contra Costa Fire Protection District (Calif.) has consistently exhibited those qualities and was named the 2018 Technology Achievement Award winner. Last year, Platt served as a member of the TargetSolutions Fire Advisory Board and helped strategize numerous enhancements to improve the platform’s overall usability.

“On behalf of myself and the Contra Costa Fire Protection District, I would like to thank TargetSolutions for their recognition and the Technology Achievement Award. TargetSolutions has been our partner in technology for years and they enable us to keep at the forefront of our industry, by being at the top of their industry.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is now accepting applications for the annual Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. Up to 2,500 grants will be awarded in 2018 for first responders in need of equipment, training, or other essential resources to their mission.

Fire departments experiencing budgetary hardships have an opportunity to infuse their organizations with new life through a federally funded grant program. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program offers aid to first responders to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other necessary resources to achieve their department’s mission.

fema-button-grant-programThe grants are broken down into sub-categories designed to help organizations seeking aid with specific operational goals. The available grants are as follows:

  • Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG): Offers departments funding for critically needed resources to equip and train firefighters in operational efficiency and to support community resilience.
  • Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants (SAFER): Provides funding to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help increase the number of trained “frontline” firefighters available in their communities.
  • Fire Prevention & Safety Grants (FP&S): Supports projects that enhance public safety and firefighters from fire and related hazards.

Developed in 2001 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the mission of the program is to “strengthen national preparedness and resilience.” Focusing on eligible fire departments, non-affiliated emergency medical service (EMS) organizations, and State Fire Training Academies (SFTA), the program annually projects to award as many as 2,500 grants to approved organizations.

Award sizes are determined by the populations of the jurisdictions served. Applicants should be prepared to provide documentation and background information on their department’s specific needs and goals:

  • Organization and the Community Served: Discuss your organization and the special needs or hazards faced by your community and how they impact your department.
  • Financial Need: Why does your organization need financial assistance and what types of budgetary distress are you currently experiencing?
  • Project Description and Budget Justification: Explain some of your department’s projects and how they impact your budget.

TargetSolutions’ NFPA 1410 Evolutions Training Series Honored with Prestigious Brandon Hall Award

TargetSolutions’ NFPA 1410 Evolutions training series has been honored with a Brandon Hall Group Excellence in Learning Award.

SAN DIEGO – TargetSolutions, the leading provider of e-Learning applications for the fire service, is proud to announce its NFPA 1410 Evolutions training series has been awarded the prestigious Brandon Hall Group Excellence in Learning Award, taking home Silver honors for the “Best Use of Video for Learning” category.

Commonly referred to as the “Academy Awards” by learning, talent and business executives, the Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards Program debuted in 1994 as the first of its kind in the learning industry. Per Brandon Hall’s website, the Excellence Awards “recognize the best organizations that have successfully deployed programs, strategies, modalities, processes, systems, and tools that have achieved measurable results.”

Shot on location in St. Charles, Mo., and Land O’ Lakes, Fla., the production was aided with the full cooperation of the St. Charles Fire Department and Pasco County Fire Rescue to bring the series to life.

Vector Solutions, the parent company of TargetSolutions, assembled a team to storyboard the series, capture the drills on video, and then develop the 14-course training package that was formally released this past March. The final product is a series of stunning training courses driven by groundbreaking video demonstrations of the most commonly encountered fireground evolutions.

We asked some of the key players in the series’ development to reflect on the experience as well as what this award means:

NFPA 1410 EvolutionsPAUL COSTELLO, FF/EMT-P, SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT

Paul Costello wrote and directed the NFPA 1410 Evolutions series while also serving as an onscreen instructor for each of the 14 installments. “From the project onset I felt this was a unique angle on training that hadn’t been successfully accomplished before. Our team’s work brought multiple dimensions of learning to the student that hadn’t ever been attempted in the industry. The end product is a learning platform that transcends jurisdictions and is also a primer for the seasoned officer as well as a tight how-to for the newer firefighter in the agency.”

NFPA 1410 EvolutionsBRYAN FITZGERALD, CONTENT MANAGER

Bryan Fitzgerald, who led the charge in developing these courses in post-production, praised the level of teamwork that was displayed to make this project a reality. “It’s excellent to see a project that required so much teamwork be recognized for this award. From the courses’ author, to the videographers who filmed the footage, to the editors and graphic designers who created the content, the developers from the Harbinger Group, everyone involved in this massive undertaking always held their work to the highest standards. This resulted in some of the most outstanding courses TargetSolutions has ever produced.”

NFPA 1410 EvolutionsGREG BALDWIN, MARKETING CONTENT SPECIALIST

Greg Baldwin was one of two videographers on location in St. Charles and is also credited with producing the TargetSolutions introductory fire logo in each of the 14 courses. “It’s humbling to see how our hard work is being recognized in the same category as globally known brands and companies. The field of competition really helps to put it all into perspective. Facebook took home a Bronze in the same category that the NFPA 1410 Evolutions took home a Silver.”

NFPA 1410 EvolutionsCHRIS ANDREWS, VIDEO PRODUCER

Chris Andrews was one of two videographers to capture the action on location and also edited the raw footage down to the bare essentials in post-production. “I feel like we had the perfect team out there and at the end of the day we put out a really good product that’s unmatched in the industry. It’s a great honor for our whole team to take home such a recognized and valuable award.”

NFPA 1410 EvolutionsJOHN HEINDEL, CONTENT DEVELOPER

John Heindel starred in post-production where he collected the edited catalog of video and images and developed a bulk of the courses in the series. “It’s encouraging to receive recognition for the NFPA 1410 course series, as it proves how effort, dedication, and teamwork lead to a successful product. These courses fuse evolution demonstrations with real-world scenarios, keeping today’s firefighters prepared, and it’s an honor to have participated in a project of such scope and magnitude.”

NFPA 1410 EvolutionsMICHAEL SCHREINER, SENIOR DIRECTOR OF CONTENT

Michael Schreiner helped organize and oversee the entire production. He was also on location to capture the beautiful overhead drone shots seen in the courses. “One of the major advantages of combining our companies is the integration of the strong competencies each company brings to the table. Our TargetSolutions and RedVector content teams brought video production expertise that was filmed in creative ways like the firefighter industry has never seen.  Leveraging the strengths of both teams, paired with the additional subject matter expertise and actors from the St. Charles Fire Department made for the perfect blend of content and innovative video production.”

TargetSolutions to Showcase Enhanced Platform Usability During Fire-Rescue International

SAN DIEGO – TargetSolutions, the leading provider of e-Learning applications for the fire service, will unveil game-changing enhancements for managing fire department training at the International Association of Fire Chief’s (IAFC) 2017 Fire-Rescue International in Charlotte, N.C.

2017 Fire-Rescue International

TargetSolutions will unveil new platform updates at the IAFC’s 2017 Fire-Rescue International.

TargetSolutions will be at booth No. 1237 during exhibit hall hours July 27-29 to answer questions and showcase recent updates to the industry’s most dynamic online firefighter training technology.

In 2016, more than 16.5 million training and compliance tasks were completed by thousands of agencies utilizing the platform. New upgrades will make that process even more user-friendly, said TargetSolutions’ Director of Product & User Experience Jennifer Jones.

“TargetSolutions is focused on releasing time-saving updates that reduce the number of clicks it takes to get where you want to go,” Jones said. “Our most recent set of updates were designed with busy training officers in mind.”

Here are some of TargetSolutions’ new capabilities that will be on display during FRI:

  • The ability to manage and deliver custom activities with fewer steps when tracking training and compliance
  • The ability to efficiently assign activities directly from the activity build page
  • The ability to effectively control file versioning inside the system, as well as upload pictures and other documents on mobile devices

In addition to enhanced usability, attendees of the annual conference can learn more about TargetSolutions’ latest training courses, including the all-new NFPA® 1410 Fireground Evolutions Series.

Soon fire departments will be able to create their own competency assessment to test firefighters’ knowledge and fill training gaps, Jones said. New functionality will enable training officers to set test questions and automatically assign TargetSolutions courses and their own activities to explain concepts behind missed questions.

“New courses and platform functionalities like this are a part of TargetSolutions’ goal of continuous improvement. Upcoming TargetSolutions product enhancements will continue to make it even easier to create, deliver and track through the platform.”

Additionally, a TargetSolutions representative will attend the IAFC’s Volunteer & Combination Officers Section’s (VCOS) annual meeting where Michael Accardo III of the St. Tammany Fire District 9 will be honored as the 2017 Training Officer Recognition Award winner. Accardo, a chief of training and safety for the combination department in Bush, La., was selected for the prestigious honor because of his unmatched commitment to delivering innovative firefighter training.

This marks the fourth year in a row TargetSolutions and the VCOS are teaming up to present the prestigious honor, which is designated each year for an individual who displays exemplary conduct befitting of a training officer. Capt. Chip Everett of Oshtemo Township Fire Department (Mich.), Asst. Chief Brad Pinsky of Manlius Fire Department (N.Y.) and Deputy Chief Steve Malone of the Manhattan Fire Protection District (Ill.) won the award in previous years.
