Special Reimbursement Program Covers Up to 100 Percent of TargetSolutions’ Costs in Minnesota

Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education Makes Funding Available Now Through June 30

SAN DIEGO — TargetSolutions, the industry’s leading online firefighter training management system, has never been more affordable for departments in the state of Minnesota. And by affordable, we mean up to 100 percent off user fees.

tslogo_symbol-color-smallFor a limited time, fire departments in the state of Minnesota can sign up for TargetSolutions and potentially incur no costs for the first 12 months. This is the result of the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education’s (MBFTE) reimbursement program, which is available now through June 30, 2017.

The MBFTE’s mission is to promote “excellence in the fire service by funding standardized training” and this year’s top strategic initiative is to move toward having 100 percent of the state’s firefighters trained on NFPA 1001. With that goal in mind, the MBFTE will maintain its training reimbursement funding level of $200 per firefighter in the state, which can be used on TargetSolutions’ computer-based system.

To take advantage of this opportunity, agencies in Minnesota need to contact TargetSolutions or the MBFTE to start the reimbursement process, said Executive Director Steve Flaherty.

“We’ve changed the process from a grant to a reimbursement,” Flaherty said. “We’ve streamlined it to make it easier for the departments. The training needs to be affiliated with the national standard, NFPA 1001 and done by a qualified instructor. This goes for EMS training as well.”

That’s where TargetSolutions comes in. The industry’s most innovative technology for managing training compliance offers more than 450 hours of fire department training, including more than 250 hours of Fire and EMS recertification.

The course catalog for firefighters covers NFPA 1001, NFPA 1021 and NFPA 1500. In addition, TargetSolutions is organizationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE) and features robust recordkeeping applications for tracking and reporting EMS recertification and ISO training hours. Departments can also track their 11 core elements with TargetSolutions. The 11 core elements are recommendations from OSHA standards, which provide Minnesota’s agencies with multiple options for designing an annual training program that meets requirements.

“TargetSolutions’ online training platform fits well with today’s firefighters and their schedules,” Flaherty said. “We’re seeing a move from traditional standup classes to online training in addition to hands-on training. Our goal is to get training to firefighters and TargetSolutions offers a way to get that training in the hands of learners.

“This funding provides us the ability to reimburse fire departments and municipalities and offset these costs. TargetSolutions qualifies for this reimbursement and is a great way for firefighters to get the training they need. There is a shift in learning and in how students get information. It’s no longer every Tuesday night in the station.”

If you would like more information on this program, please visit the MBFTE’s website at www.mbfte.org or call TargetSolutions at (800) 840-8046.

Packed House on Hand for TargetSolutions’ Annual Networking & Training Workshop at Firehouse World

cb-2017-tsc-fh-user-group-markTargetSolutions Presents Prestigious Awards to LAFD’s Capt. Benjamin Banks, Southern Marin’s Bn. Chief Matt Barnes and St. Charles Fire Department’s Capt. Jamie Young

SAN DIEGO – TargetSolutions, the leader in online training management applications for fire departments, hosted its annual Networking & Training Workshop on Tuesday during Firehouse World in San Diego.

More than 70 attendees from fire departments across the country packed the Marriott Gaslamp Quarter’s Altitude Sky Lounge to meet with TargetSolutions account managers and mingle with other training officers. The highlight of the afternoon was the awards presentation, which honors platform managers who share the same commitment as TargetSolutions to deliver exceptional fire department training.

The Technology Achievement Award

capt-ben-banks

Los Angeles Fire Department’s Capt. Benjamin Banks was the recipient of this year’s Technology Achievement Award, which goes to a platform administrator focused on innovation in fire department training.

Capt. Benjamin Banks of the Los Angeles Fire Department was presented with the Technology Achievement Award for consistently looking to maximize TargetSolutions’ web-based system. Banks’ forward-thinking mindset has helped his metro agency’s training program flourish.

“Our department, in general, is trying to use technology more and more, all the time for everything,” said Banks, who has been managing the department’s training platform for the last year. “That’s really been a directive of our mayor and our fire chief, so this falls right in line with that.”

The ability to measure training hours – as well as other key performance indicators related to training – is critical to LAFD, which has increased its utilization of the TargetSolutions platform since Banks took on his current role.

“Being able to provide metrics, that’s what it’s all about,” Banks said. “I hear that across the fire service. Metrics, it’s the numbers, it’s the totals, really being able to show the work that we’re doing, the training that people in the fire stations and otherwise are doing, it’s all about being able to put those numbers on. Unless you have technology that can support that, it’s going to be very difficult. And then having technology that can make that job even easier, I mean that’s what the goal is. TargetSolutions has definitely helped us in that regard.”

The Vanguard Award

Bn. Chief Matt Barnes of Southern Marin Fire Department (Calif.). was given the Vanguard Award, which goes each year to someone who exemplifies dedication in the delivery of fire department training. Barnes has consistently worked to maximize TargetSolutions and help his agency streamline training and compliance.

“The fire service changes and evolves on a daily basis and the only way to stay current is to research and go out and perform skills based off the information that you’ve gathered and learned from the past,” said Barnes, who has been with the agency for the last 15 years. “We’ve had some significant near misses in our organization. We’ve had two line-of-duty deaths in our organizations due to health, so training is very near and dear to me. I think it’s the fabric of what makes someone become a good, proficient performing individual in the fire service.”

The Helping Hand Award

The final award went to Capt. Jamie Young of the St. Charles Fire Department in Missouri. The Helping Hand is delivered each year to someone who goes above and beyond to assist TargetSolutions or their neighboring agencies who are using the platform. Young’s department hosted a team of TargetSolutions videographers in 2016 for a special training shoot and the footage is being used in TargetSolutions’ upcoming NFPA 1410 training series, which is scheduled for release in March.

Young was not in attendance, but he recorded a video message that was played during the event.

“On behalf of myself and the St. Charles Fire Department I want to say thank you to TargetSolutions for such a wonderful recognition,” Young said. “It’s been a pleasure working with this company to bring such cutting-edge technology to the forefront of the fire service. It’s this cutting-edge technology that is keeping us safer and smarter on the fire ground. TargetSolutions has helped us and countless others across the country and I’m personally looking forward to many future projects.”

TargetSolutions Meets New York Department of Health’s Requirements for Online CME Program

SAN DIEGO – TargetSolutions, the leading provider of computer-based training management applications for public safety agencies, is now able to provide fire and EMS departments in the state of New York with 100 percent of their recertification training.

fire-ny-100-percent-cme-learn-moreAgencies can now complete the New York Department of Health’s required paperwork to request permission for completing 100 percent of their Three-Year EMS Continuing Medical Education (CME) Recertification Program through TargetSolutions.

“We’re excited about this development because it simplifies the continuing education process for agencies in New York that are using TargetSolutions or agencies that are about to implement the platform,” said TargetSolutions’ Director of Product Andrea Letzring. “In the past, agencies could use TargetSolutions for 50 percent of the required training. Now, the entire CME requirement can be fulfilled utilizing TargetSolutions. This is a huge benefit to agencies because it streamlines training, saving valuable time and resources.”

When an agency submits to allow their EMS providers to utilize 100 percent self-study thru an online training provider, the agency selects a vendor. The New York State Bureau of EMS then approves the agency’s program based on the outline of that program. Any vendor used must meet specific security and disability access regulations. They must also meet rules regarding the distribution and function of the online content.

The City of Olean Fire Department (N.Y.) was the first agency to submit the required paperwork, outlined in the New York Department of Health’s Administration Manual. The process included answering six mandatory questions with detailed responses made available by TargetSolutions. The department’s Line Supervisor Tim Richardson was thrilled to learn the department’s application had been accepted.

“It’s hard to complete continuing education requirements without something like TargetSolutions. An online system keeps you coordinated and puts all of the training at our fingertips. Having 100 percent online was important for us. It gives us the ability to instantaneously determine where everyone is at from a training perspective.”

Tim Richardson, City of Olean Fire Department (N.Y.)

TargetSolutions features more than 160 hours of accredited online EMS training that is accepted in the state of New York after the training is approved in writing by an EMS Agency’s certified instructor-coordinator. In addition, TargetSolutions is organizationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation Pre-Hospital Continuing Education.

Emergency responders in the state of New York are required to complete 72 hours of training every three years. Now, the entirety of that requirement can be fulfilled with TargetSolutions. Please note, each agency’s approval is left solely to the discretion of the New York Department of Health.

TargetSolutions Releases Two New Dynamic Training Courses for First Responders

TSLogo_BadgeSAN DIEGO – TargetSolutions, the leading provider of computer-based training management applications for public safety agencies, has launched two new online courses for first responders. The new titles, “EMS Incident Command System” and “Fire Service: Health and Safety,” join TargetSolutions’ catalog of more than 250 hours of Fire and EMS recertification training.

“These courses are key additions to our course library because they address two extremely vital areas for emergency responders,” said TargetSolutions’ Director of Content Lauren Crosby. “We are always looking to add valuable content to our library and these two courses do exactly that for fire and EMS agencies.”

EMS Incident Command System” delivers an essential overview of best practices for any public safety organization that might be involved in responding to a mass-casualty or multiple-agency response incident. The Incident Command System (ICS) is mandated by the U.S. Federal Government through the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

“Established by emergency management professionals as a way to create leadership during emergencies, this course brings the essentials of ICS straight to your fingertips,” said Crosby. “This is an exciting course for EMS professionals because it’s such an important area of focus. We’re thrilled to make it available for those seeking EMS continuing education.”

The visually impressive course, featuring in-depth learning modules and a robust test bank with scenario-based questions, was created by TargetSolutions’ subject matter expert John Peruggia, who currently serves as an adjunct professor at Metropolitan College of New York where he teaches courses in the Emergency Management Program.

“The Incident Command System is a critically important tool in order to effectively and efficiently manage incidents of all sizes and scopes,” said Peruggia, who served more than 25 years with the Fire Department of New York where he became the Chief of Emergency Medical Services.

“In today’s often uncertain environment, Emergency Medical Personnel must clearly understand it’s application and utilize it regularly in order to best provide to those who may require their assistance at planned or unplanned events. This course provides the student with a fundamental understanding of how to apply the foundational concepts of ICS to the Mass Casualty Incident environment.”

John Peruggia, Subject Matter Expert for TargetSolutions

The second all-new course in TargetSolutions’ robust catalog of online training for emergency responders, “Fire Service: Health and Safety,” presents the concepts, science, and economics of fire service-related health and safety. This course outlines why firefighter wellness is critical to the fire service and the various risks associated with the profession.

“After completing this course, users will know the common types of line-of-duty-deaths among firefighters, common diseases suffered by firefighters, and why these diseases are so prevalent,” said Crosby. “Members of the fire service know their professional world is different than the rest of us. This course discusses issues that impact firefighters’ well-being and how firefighters can reduce their risks.”

This 60-minute training course, featuring interactive lessons and engaging content, delivers 10 learning modules with a 10-question exam.

Fire-Rescue International 2016 TargetSolutions will be at booth No. 21102 during the conference in San Antonio, Texas. Here are the exhibit hall hours:
Friday, Aug. 19: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The upgraded functionality, which enables regional training groups to work together more effectively, will be on display during Fire-Rescue International.

TargetSolutions will be demonstrating the power of this application, as well as its complete suite of fire department training tools, at booth No. 21102 when the exhibit hall opens Aug. 19 in San Antonio, Texas.

“FRI is an awesome opportunity for current customers and prospects who are interested in TargetSolutions to learn about the benefits of Enterprise,” said Product Manager Misty Pratt. “This application has been upgraded to make collaboration between connected agencies more effective. If your department relies on mutual aid, TargetSolutions’ Enterprise can bring you together to streamline training, centralize resources and standardize operations.”

Another item on display at FRI will be AlphaACT® FIRE’s scenario-based training courses. Earlier this year, TargetSolutions partnered with AlphaTRAC Products to deliver this dynamic training on the TargetSolutions platform. These courses provide a unique training experience built to help firefighters improve their decision-making skills.

alphaact-fire-logoWhile the chance to provide attendees with more information about Enterprise and AlphaACT® FIRE’s training library – plus several new courses coming to TargetSolutions’ course library – is at the top of TargetSolutions’ priority list, it’s not the only reason to stop by the booth, said Regional Sales Manager Kegan Konrady.

“We know many of our clients will be in attendance and we love the opportunity to meet face to face with them and answer their questions about the platform,” Konrady said.

Here are some of the topics TargetSolutions will be discussing with attendees during FRI:

  • How to schedule, deliver and track ISO training hours
  • How to manage licenses, inspections, policies, etc.
  • How to manage task books and post-incident reports
  • How to achieve compliance with mandatory EMS requirements
  • How to document daily training drills and activities

“This is one of the premier events on our calendar. The exhibit hall is a tremendous opportunity to learn about the industry’s newest technology and to meet one-on-one with customers and other agencies interested in TargetSolutions. We’re happy to provide live demos. Everyone is welcome at the booth.”

Kegan Konrady, Regional Sales Manager, TargetSolutions

In addition to the face-time with customers and prospects, TargetSolutions is thrilled to present the 2016 Training Officer Recognition Award to Steve Malone of Manhattan Fire Protection District in Illinois.

TargetSolutions has sponsored this award in combination with the International Association of Fire Chief’s (IAFC) Volunteer & Combination Officers Section (VCOS) for each of the last three years. Malone will accept the honor during a special ceremony for VCOS members on Aug. 18.

If you have any questions about TargetSolutions, please stop by booth No. 21102 during exhibit hours or call us at (800) 840-8046.

Steve Malone of the Manhattan Fire Protection District in Illinois Named the 2016 Training Officer of the Year

SAN DIEGO – TargetSolutions, the leading provider of computer-based training management applications for public safety agencies, and the International Association of Fire Chief’s (IAFC) Volunteer & Combination Officers Section (VCOS) are excited to announce Deputy Chief Steve Malone of the Manhattan Fire Protection District (Ill.) as the 2016 Training Officer Recognition Award winner.

Malone, 32, is scheduled to accept the award in August at Fire-Rescue International in San Antonio during a special ceremony for the IAFC’s VCOS members. This is the third year in a row TargetSolutions and the VCOS teamed up to present the award, which is designated each year for an individual who goes above and beyond to demonstrate innovation in firefighter training.

“This is a huge honor,” said Malone, who was instrumental in the implementation and standardization of training programs for the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division 19 (MABAS 19) in Illinois. “To see what determination and hard work can lead to is amazing. Without the support of my department, Chief and MABAS Division this would have been 10 times harder.”

“I wasn’t looking for recognition, but to know what you’re doing is effecting positive change, not only in Manhattan, but across MABAS Division 19 and Illinois, is huge.”

Steve Malone, Deputy Chief, Manhattan Fire Protection District (Ill.)

David Piper of Orland Fire Protection District is part of the MABAS Division 19 and he recognized the exceptional contribution put forth by his colleague Malone.

“Deputy Chief Steve Malone exemplifies the position of training officer,” Piper wrote when nominating Malone. “Steve’s drive to ensure that all members of his organization as well as the members of surrounding communities are trained to the highest level are unprecedented. Steve has been a driving force to develop a training program that meets local, state and national requirements for his department.”

The program Malone has installed, utilizing TargetSolutions’ online training management system, has been shared with surrounding departments and implemented across the MABAS Division 19. The regimen consists of lesson plans, job performance requirements, skill sheets, presentations and videos all delivered over a three-year period for all firefighter, engineer and officer positions within the area.

“The program has spread to include departments throughout the state of Illinois,” Piper said. “The program has been adopted by many departments because it organizes training for organizations to ensure that their training program covers all the necessary components.”

MABAS Division 19, which is made of 12 departments, is benefitting from Malone’s efforts. But Malone credits Piper for his help in assisting with the creation of the program that is scheduled, delivered and tracked with TargetSolutions.

“We had a vision of developing a training program vs. just going out and doing training,” said Malone. “Training officers need to look at the direction they want to go and develop a true training program that is achievable. What we’re doing in our division is great because we’re standardizing things. To see the end result is rewarding and seeing how well everyone is doing is a testament to how the training program is going.”

As the winner of the award, Malone will receive a trip to San Antonio for FRI, which is scheduled Aug. 17-20, including round-trip airfare and hotel accommodations, as well as a plaque commemorating the award.

Capt. Chip Everett of Oshtemo Township Fire Department (Mich.) and Asst. Chief Brad Pinsky of Manlius Fire Department (N.Y.) won the prestigious award in 2014 and ’15, respectively.
