The Time Has Come, TargetSolutions Is Switching All Clients to Upgraded Platform in December

If you’ve been waiting to make the switch to TargetSolutions’ new platform, the time has come. Over the next few weeks, TargetSolutions will be transferring all of its remaining clients who haven’t switched to the upgraded system yet. All sites will be updated by Friday, Dec. 14.

For those who have waited – get ready for a whole new experience. TargetSolutions is confident you’re going to love the new features.

“The reaction has been tremendous,” said Jenny Fergason, who serves as TargetSolutions’ Director of Client Services. “The clients are finding it to be more intuitive and easier to navigate. Our tech team really did a great job enhancing the platform.”

Clients already on the system have gushed over the systems look and functionality. It is more engaging and user friendly, with many new features, like the web-based Help System, the ability to notify a user the minute a new assignment has been assigned, a real-time progress dashboard and more robust reporting capabilities. They are also enjoying the recent upgrades to the File Center and the new Shift Calendar, while users have benefited from the new Notification System.

“The ability to pin credentials to the top of the schedule on the home page is really simplifying the process for users,” Fergason said. “Now, when they login to the website, they immediately know where to go and what they have to do. It’s just more engaging and effective.”

The new system was first made available in late 2011 and TargetSolutions has systematically moved clients over. But the time has come for a mandatory switch, Fergason said.

We are confident in the upgrades to the system and know you’ll enjoy the benefits of our new system, Fergason said.

TargetSolutions’ Client Services team is always ready to answer questions at (800) 840-8048.

Clients Find Exactly What They Need with Fire Department File Sharing in TargetSolutions’ Community Resources

Tim Riley still remembers the first time he was able to put TargetSolutions to work for his organization. It was late in the summer of 2009 and H1N1 was in the news on a daily basis. The powerful influenza virus was reaching pandemic proportions when Riley, formerly the training chief with the Pinellas Park Fire Department in Florida, was tasked with testing out his organizations new online training system.

“It didn’t take him long to realize the departments new training management platform was going to make his job easier.”

“We were just coming on board and I was told to go back and play with it,” Riley said. “The first thing I took a look at was Community Resources. I just did a quick search on H1N1 and low and behold, there was the exact type of PowerPoint I was looking for from a department in California. I immediately saved it to my desktop, changed the references of California to Florida, changed the references of earthquakes to hurricanes, and assigned it to my people. I knew right then and there Community Resources was going to be a tremendous tool.”

Riley was instantly enamored with Community Resources because it keeps training officers from having to recreate the wheel every time, he said.

“There are so many things that have been shared in Community Resources, its truly an invaluable tool,” said Riley, who now works as a Product Specialist with TargetSolutions and is responsible for helping TargetSolutions build its ISO Tracking solution. “We’re all trying to do more with less. This is one way we can help each other do that – by sharing resources that can be customized for different departments.”

The two highest-rated resources, which were posted in August of 2009, are still the most popular with TargetSolutions’ network of users. Together the two resources have been viewed more than 11,000 times and have been utilized by more than 100 organizations.

Jeff Clyons, who worked as SDFDs assistant training officer when the videos were created, said his department’s firefighters were having issues with ventilation, so it attacked the issue with a multi-pronged training approach. The department spent three months focusing on ventilation by incorporating the PowerPoint and video with in-station drills and an in-service training session where crews had the chance to work with chainsaws during a manipulative drill.

“We realized our recruits had learned one way to cut a hole in a roof and we realized when they got out in operations, that one way was restricting their ability to do other things,” said Clyons. “It was limiting what our personnel were doing when it came to ventilating a roof. So we wanted to teach our existing personnel multiple ways to do this. We wanted to raise the bar on our ability to use a saw and raise the bar on cutting holes. Our message was well received. I think it assisted people who were tactile learners, people who were visual learners, and people who were auditory learners. They all had a chance and it hit all the senses, so we definitely felt retention was better.”

There are literally hundreds of resources thanks to fire department file sharing in the repository and with such a powerful search engine, clients can usually locate the topics they are seeking. In fact, Community Resources has been nicknamed, Google on steroids for firefighters.

“The search engine is helpful if you go into it looking for a certain topic, like forcible entry, or something – you will find material in there,” said Wes Djuplin, who is a firefighter/instructor with the Kenosha Fire Department in Wisconsin.

With such a tremendous tool for finding material to help with teaching and keeping firefighters prepared for duty, clients are benefiting from TargetSolutions.

“Community Resources is a way for instructors to network and share information,” said Eddie Buchanan, who is the Past President of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors. “If there is a program they have done that they are proud of, they can put it out there for everyone to use. They can also look at what others have done for some help. It’s really a great way to share in a community setting. I think firefighters are just very resourceful and when something benefits them they’ll try to find a way to put it to good use.”

‘Phenomenal’ Recordkeeping Tools Make Training Management Easier for Haines City Fire & Rescue

Like all fire departments, Haines City Fire & Rescue is looking to achieve total excellence in its daily operations. The department is continuously striving to improve so it can better serve the growing community of more than 38,000 citizens (during winter) in Haines City, Fla. With two stations and 30 personnel members – doing more with less is a philosophy the department has learned to accept.

But in order for the department to reach its optimum efficiency, Capt. Kim Miller must ensure each individual is properly trained and that all of the departments records are up to date and well organized.

Maintaining an accurate training file for each individual without a powerful system like TargetSolutions hinders the efficiency of any department. Miller knows as well as anybody how difficult and time-consuming it is to manually track training records.

“In the past, I had to check with each individual daily to get their training information and manually enter it into a spreadsheet. The process was extremely time-consuming,” Miller said. “That method of tracking individual training also makes it difficult to ensure that the reports are completely accurate.”

The department needed a solution that would put an end to yesteryears time-consuming and outdated system of manual recordkeeping. With the implementation of TargetSolutions in 2010, Haines City Fire & Rescue found its answer – transforming a once inefficient process into one of the department’s greatest strengths.

“The recordkeeping is absolutely phenomenal,” said Miller. “The accuracy and simplicity of TargetSolutions is outstanding.”

Managing records has never been easier for Capt. Miller, who feels confident the utilization of TargetSolutions will enhance the departments ISO rating whenever its next audit is conducted. Miller has already seen the benefits TargetSolutions offers with an easy-to-use application for tracking training specifically created for ISO purposes.

“It will definitely improve our ISO rating,” Miller said. “It only takes 10 minutes to generate reports for every shift captain to let them know exactly what they need to do for ISO by the end of the year. The speed is amazing.”

Haines City Fire & Rescue is not only benefiting from TargetSolutions by efficiently managing records – it also extensively uses the platform and more than 250 hours of Fire and EMS recertification courses to provide online training for personnel.

“We get so much training,” said Miller. “We assign at least six TargetSolutions courses every month. I call it ‘free training’ because the records management aspect of the platform alone is worth the price. All of the training that comes with it is a bonus.”

About TargetSolutions
Founded in 1999, TargetSolutions is the leader in online training and records management for public entities. More than 2,000 organizations across the country use our technology to solve their training needs. We work hard every day to understand our clients’ challenges and deliver powerful tools that save time and money.

Customer Driven Innovation Fuels TargetSolutions’ Online Training and Records Management System

TargetSolutions has always listened to the recommendations of its clients. The reason is simple: You know your job better than we do. As a result, you know how our online training and records management system can help you the most.

“Our platform wouldn’t be what it is today if not for the feedback from clients,” said TargetSolutions’ Vice President of Operations Alex Day. “We have always listened to their ideas and worked to make our platform more functional for the people using it. We truly value the insight our clients have provided over the years because that is what has helped us create tools that help fire departments increase operational efficiencies and reduce costs.”

There is no greater example of TargetSolutions listening to its clients’ requests than the creation of the ISO Training Tracker, which was built with the help of Tim Riley and Guy Keirn of the Pinellas County Training Group. Riley and Keirn worked with TargetSolutions during the early stages of the tools development in 2010, and today the ISO Training Tracker is one of the most popular features inside the TargetSolutions platform.

“We’re extremely grateful to the Pinellas County Training Group for giving us great insight and helping us create a robust application,” Day said. “Our ISO Training Tracker helps departments automatically accumulate proper documentation for their next ISO audit. It makes the entire process easier.”

Riley, who now works with TargetSolutions as a product specialist and previously worked for the Dunedin Fire Department in Florida, was like most other training chiefs who have suffered multiple headaches preparing for an ISO audit. The simple fact is that if records are not collected properly, departments will not receive Class 1 status from ISO. But thanks to Riley, Keirn and other clients who offered advice, there is now a better way through TargetSolutions.

TargetSolutions provides access to customizable ISO training record template for training officers to deliver to employees. After that they can rest confidently knowing the industry’s most powerful records management system will automatically track completions and generate detailed reports, eliminating the hassle of searching through endless paper stacks and spreadsheets.

“This has really streamlined the process for ISO inspections,” Riley said. “In years past, you’d have to take all your records as best you could, pull everything out and pour through everything. But with the Training Tracker you can be proactive instead of reactive. You know the answers before ISO gets there. This keeps you from being blindsided by deficiencies in training records. It’s an incredible tool. It really makes peoples jobs easier.”

The ISO Training Tracker and ISO training record template are just the beginning. Credentials Manager in 2009 and the platforms major interface overhaul in 2011 were a few other monumental accomplishments fueled by the recommendations of clients. To continue receiving this type of feedback, TargetSolutions created a web-based Enhancement Request Form earlier this year so clients would have an efficient way to contact TargetSolutions and suggest improvements to the platform.

“Our tech team has traditionally heard about what we should do next from our account managers,” said TargetSolutions’ Product Manager Misty Pratt. “But the enhancement request form gives us a way to track requests and prioritize what projects should come next more effectively. Our goal has always been to constantly improve our platform. And what advice is better than that of clients who are using it every day?”

A recent success involved a request to allow e-mail notifications to be sent when courses are assigned. By July, this particular request jumped to the front of the line based on feedback received. TargetSolutions was able to build and release this feature in August. The month before, TargetSolutions released improved reporting functionality, based on the feedback from Jay Sumerlin of West Pierce Fire and Rescue in Washington.

Improved functionality of the home pages Bulletin Board, the File Center Upload Tool and the soon-to-be-released User Selector upgrades also came out of the Enhancement Request Form. At the end of the day, TargetSolutions is committed to providing the industry’s most useful applications that streamline training management and increase operational efficiency. We know that paying attention to our clients’ wishes is the best way to make that happen.

“Listening to our clients is our No. 1 priority,” said TargetSolutions’ Client Services Manager Kelly Zielinski. “We take what they say seriously and we are focused on building tools that they will benefit from in a timely fashion and then communicating the upgrades to our clients. What we hear from our clients is the best way for us to learn what we should build next.”

TargetSolutions Simplifies Distribution of Policies Videos and More for Corona Fire Department

The Corona Fire Department has been serving the citizens of Corona since 1898. The department’s mission of serving our city with pride, integrity, and professionalism while protecting and enhancing the quality of life for the citizens of Corona, has never wavered.

Corona has seven stations and 100 members serving a population of more than 153,000 residents over 39.2 square miles. The department is headed by Fire Chief John Medina, while Captain Jeremy Verderber makes certain the staff is properly certified and prepared to serve at a moment’s notice.

But ensuring everyone within a department is up to date with all of their training can be complicated and difficult. The muddled process of having to attain written signatures from each individual at all seven stations where they took a course, read a document, or watched a video was unsustainable for Corona. The absence of a comprehensive training management tool was preventing the department from reaching its maximum efficiency.

In 2009, with the arrival of TargetSolutions, everything changed for the department. Coronas most challenging training issues – mainly achieving accreditation and tracking records – were quickly eliminated.

“For the mandated stuff and compliance issues, TargetSolutions is actually great,” Verderber said. “The first thing is that it satisfies minimum mandatory training requirements in certain subjects, provides all the EMS continuing education units that you would need, and allows you to add your own personal content and distribute it with the push of a button and get accurate reporting back on who has completed it.”

“The powerful Activities Builder tool inside the platform is a huge benefit,” Verderber said.

“We utilize it to send SOGs, he said. We can create a new SOG and then send it out as an activity. They review the new SOG and check the box to submit it. It makes it really easy for captains to disseminate the information. In 10 minutes it can be sent out to the entire department. Thirty days later, we can spend another 10 minutes to run a report. Department captains don’t have to worry about it, as opposed to e-mailing a hard copy and telling everyone to sign here.”

With Activities Builder, TargetSolutions makes it easy for everyone in the department to watch relevant videos.

“We can have all the crews watch it,” Verderber said. “We load it, send it out as an activity, say watch this video, and now it’s on there and anyone can pull it up and watch it.”

The overall functionality of TargetSolutions has improved compliance by giving Corona the ability to easily run reports that provide detailed information on who has done what.

“Before, we would send out a document through e-mail and tell everybody to take a look at it, but we didn’t know if they were reading it or not,” Verderber said. “Now, there is a box to check, which gives me the comfort to know they looked at it.”

Loyal Client Still Thrilled with TargetSolutions for Its ISO Reporting Capabilities

The Glendale Fire Department has been a client of TargetSolutions since January of 2001. The department serves more than 225,000 residents with nine stations and more than 240 firefighters.

Glendale Fire Department Established 1912The Glendale Fire Department has been devoted to serving its community since 1912. With nine stations answering more than 40,000 calls per year — and more than 226,000 citizens spread throughout 59 square miles of territory — it takes a cohesive unit to maintain its core mission of being “Fast, Caring, Innovative, and Professional.”

Under the direction of Mark Burdick, who was Arizona’s Chief Officer of the Year for 2011, the department and its surrounding areas are in good hands. Burdick has been with the department since 1983 and has been the chief since 2002, which was about one year after the department signed on with TargetSolutions, the industry’s pioneer in online fire training and recordkeeping applications.

Burdick knows all too well how difficult it can be to maintain compliance and be prepared for audits by the ISO for fire departments. Hunting down paper trails and thumbing through records to determine if each individual has taken the requisite training and is properly certified can be a significant challenge. That is why the department has kept TargetSolutions around for more than a decade.

“In 1998, ISO came in and we did not do well at all. It was the weak point of our department,” Burdick said. “Without TargetSolutions, it is hard to keep organized. If paper documentation was missing for someone attending a class, then you would have to decide whether to just take their word for it that they were there.”

Through the use of TargetSolutions powerful, user friendly web-based platform, Glendale’s emergency responders receive the support they need to maintain compliant; turning the department’s greatest weakness into a tremendous strength. The department’s training and recordkeeping have improved and it is now rated ISO Class 2.

“Our No. 1 issue is compliance. Do we have people doing what they should be doing? Can we show that they did it?” Burdick says. “With TargetSolutions, we can pull the records in a matter of minutes. If you want a one-stop shop, and you want to reduce overtime and maintain compliance, here is your solution.”

fire department isoThe days of paper stacks and word-of-mouth recordkeeping are over. With TargetSolutions, it is easy to track exactly who did what. “We updated our Code of Conduct policy and created a PowerPoint that we uploaded into our TargetSolutions platform,” Burdick said. “When it is on our system, we have the ability to document that everyone took it. It is that validation that is so important.”

Chief Burdick is also extremely pleased with the flexibility and savings that TargetSolutions provides.

“If I (scheduled) on-duty training, then we would have to shut down trucks, and the service that we provide to the community would take a hit,” Burdick said. “If I want to bring guys in on overtime, then the cost goes through the roof. With TargetSolutions, even at 2 a.m. a firefighter can go in and take their class. There is no one who can say the costs outweigh the benefits.”

Clearly, TargetSolutions has helped Glendale flourish. The department is one of TargetSolutions very first clients after initially signing on in 2001.

“We have been using it so long now that TargetSolutions has become a part of our culture,” Burdick said.

Credentials Manager Tool Considered TargetSolutions’ Most Powerful Application

The TargetSolutions platform is loaded with powerful applications created specifically for helping fire departments thrive. The Credentials manager tool is where many of those tools come together, giving department administrators the ability to effectively and efficiently manage their training and compliance requirements.

“Credentials enables department administrators to easily track and maintain an unlimited number of credentials, certifications, qualifications and any other type of information necessary,” said TargetSolutions’ Director of Client Services Jenny Fergason. “Whether they are courses or activities, Credentials allocates them into a credential that is well organized so that when a user sees it, they know exactly what they have to do. This gives them the personal responsibility to complete the requirements within the designated time frame set by the administrator.”

Our Credentials application has rapidly become our most powerful application because it can be used in so many different ways. Whether its new hire training, organized task books, ISO records, or whatever else you can think of, the Credentials manager tool gives our clients the flexibility to track whatever they want.

With Credentials, administrators can rest easily knowing credentials are pinned, so they appear at the top of the Schedule on users home page and are tagged with alert notifications, ensuring members will receive reminders via e-mail about important deadlines. Each alert can notify any combination of users, supervisors and administrators.

“Before TargetSolutions, we had no checks and balances, we had no alerts,” said Dan Collins, who is a training captain with Cal Fire San Diego. “With 347 employees, no one training officer has the ability to check EMT certifications, for example. There is just no better system for that without a tool like TargetSolutions.”

Is your department benefitting from this powerful application? If you’d like to learn more about how the Credentials application can help your department, please check the Help section inside the platform (search Credentials) or contact your account manager today.

Global Risk Innovations Brings TargetSolutions’ Powerful Platform to Canadian Departments

TargetSolutions is committed to delivering the most powerful online training and records management system possible so its clients can easily achieve compliance, increase operational efficiency and reduce costs. The more emergency responders the company can help achieve those goals, the better.

That’s why it made perfect sense six years ago to team up with Global Risk Innovations.

“We feel strongly about our mission of providing innovative technology solutions to public safety officials everywhere,” said TargetSolutions’ CEO Jon Handy. “By partnering with GRI, we have the opportunity to expand our reach with a company that truly shares our beliefs about operating with integrity and serving the markets we care so much about.”

GRI is a multi-national organization based out of Guelph, Ontario, which is about 30 miles southwest of Toronto. The company provides the TargetSolutions technology platform to fire departments across Canada while also delivering Blue Card Command services. GRIs stated vision is a safer, healthier global working environment through innovation and risk mitigation, which marries perfectly with TargetSolutions goals and its platforms capabilities.

“Our mission as an organization is to make sure we represent products that are beneficial to the fire world, making them safer and healthier,” said GRIs Vice President Judy Smith. “Nothing better suits our vision than TargetSolutions. Its in harmony with our beliefs as an organization.”

TargetSolutions and GRI officially joined forces in 2006, but Handy and the Canadian companys President Nelson Lawrence originally met at a conference in 2000. Their first meeting was just a year into TargetSolutions existence.

I saw the first edition of the platform and I really saw the vision in it, Lawrence said. Jon and I continued to stay in touch and we eventually developed a business relationship.

Lawrence always knew the platform could become a powerhouse, but he admitted hes impressed by just how much the system has developed over the last 12 years, he said.

“I’ve seen the platform change from a content-focused program, which some departments thought was important for them, to more of an RMS (records management system) with the ability to share training resources, so it delivers more of a value equation now than just training content,” Lawrence said. “There’s a need for better documentation because of the enforcement of regulatory agencies. Many fire departments are realizing they need better documentation and having that available in a hosted browser-based format is the ultimate solution.”

“The platform is catching on in the territories GRI serves”, Lawrence said. “The company now has large metro departments throughout Canada on the TargetSolutions platform.”

In 2009, GRI and TargetSolutions offered a $1 million grant program together in which the two companies gave away six months of the service to volunteer departments in Canada. Hundreds of firefighters tried the program through the promotion and received the benefit of online training and recordkeeping.

That was an example of us working together to serve a noble goal in educating the volunteer departments about the platform, Lawrence said.

While emergency responders in Canada have different requirements for continuing education than here in the United States, GRI has worked to receive accreditation by the varying agencies that regulate the respective provinces. The company Canadianized TargetSolutions NFPA content and is able to meet regulatory requirements if departments are asked to produce its training records.

TargetSolutions really helps departments cross their Ts and dot there Is, Smith said. The departments we talk to think the platform is amazing. Whether you are focused on training to ensure safety compliance, or just working to improve your organizations overall risk status, you will benefit from TargetSolutions impressive, easy-to-navigate technology.
