City of Dickson Fire Department Streamlines Inspections and Asset Management

Industry:

FirePublic Safety

Solution:

FireOperational ReadinessPerformance Optimization

The City of Dickson Fire Department (TN) has used TargetSolutions for training and records management since hearing about the system from a neighbor department in 2017. Last year, when Assistant Chief Kane Sesler discovered the TargetSolutions Check It™ application, he immediately contacted his TargetSolutions account manager to implement the new inspections and asset management software.

The TargetSolutions Check It™ application is available via a mobile app or through the TargetSolutions platform on any web-enabled device. With this system, agencies can perform and manage daily inspections of apparatus, equipment, drugs and other inventory in just a few clicks. Praising its comprehensive features, Assistant Chief Sesler credits the application for streamlining many aspects of his department’s daily operations.

City of Dickson Fire Department

The city of Dickson is located 40 miles west of Nashville, Tenn. and has a population of roughly 18,000. Operating out of two fire stations and a third underway, City of Dickson FD has 39 full-time firefighters to administer fire suppression, inspections/investigations and public education services to their community.

With a motto of “if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten,” the department strives for innovative solutions to the challenges they face.

Streamlines Daily Inspections & Other Processes

Setting up the TargetSolutions Check It™ system was a simple process for City of Dickson FD. Sesler explained how his department was able to customize their own checklists and perform inspections according to their trucks, equipment and inventory. Electronic inspections have also helped the department skip multiple steps in their daily rituals. Rather than having to record checklist data in a form or spreadsheet and then transfer the information, everything is centralized in one, easy-to-use system.

“They can go in daily and use the tablet to check items and then administrators can access the information and review it for any issues.” Assistant Chief Sesler described.

Comprehensive reports have also been helpful for the department. Through Reports, Sesler and other administrators can see apparatus and equipment information such as how long it’s been deadlined (out of service), usage and other check history statistics.

Finally, although still the process of building out the Work Orders module, Sesler looks forward to using this functionality. With this tool, his department can create tickets for equipment or vehicles that require maintenance, track their status as they are out for repair and document costs.

“This helps us save money and make the most out of our resources.”

Utilizing Barcode Scanning Capabilities

Maximizing the barcode scanner in the TargetSolutions Check It™ application has made looking up equipment and inventory easier than ever. “Our department is getting big into using the barcodes,” Sesler said. “As employees are getting more used to using it, we’re able to streamline all processes for equipment keep up and maintenance.”

The City of Dickson FD added barcodes to its hoses, SCBA bottles and air packs, ladders and other large equipment to make ongoing checks even more efficient. Using the scanner in the TargetSolutions Check It™ app, its personnel can pull up an item, perform an inspection and report any damages or store it for future use.

Comprehensive Drug Log

In addition to streamlining apparatus, equipment, and inventory inspections, the Drug Log has been instrumental for City of Dickson Fire Department. With this application, personnel know the status and levels of essential drugs before every shift. Based on this information, they can notify the EMS officer when a drug on an apparatus is expiring or running low.

“The EMS officer can relocate drugs that are about to expire to more busy trucks to use them before they go bad,” Sesler said. “This helps us save money and make the most out of our resources.”
