The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reported firefighters face a 9 percent increase in cancer diagnoses, and a 14 percent increase in cancer-related deaths, compared to the general population. Additionally, firefighters are at higher risk of contracting cancers such as mesothelioma. With these findings, promoting cancer awareness and prevention strategies is crucial for the fire service.
To help spread awareness, Vector Solutions, TargetSolutions’ parent company, will be donating $1 to the American Cancer Society for every completion of the fire course: NFPA 1851 – Cancer-Related Risks of Firefighting. The donation is $1 per course completion up to $5,000 for every course completed before Jan. 1, 2020.
About Firefighter Cancer Awareness Training
This online firefighter training course features 13 video-based lessons and uses real-life case studies and statistics to offer best practices for the decontamination, isolation and reporting of PPE and equipment. It also outlines the eight most common carcinogens firefighters face and the importance of the care and cleaning of turnout gear to reduce risk.
“Firefighters put their lives at risk every day by simply coming to work and doing their job,” said Alex Berry, Executive Vice President of the Public Sector Business Unit for Vector Solutions and member of the American Cancer Society’s Greater DC/Baltimore Area Advisory Board. “We’ve learned over the last few years just how much risk these brave firefighters face when called into action. TargetSolutions feels a responsibility to help educate the fire service about the risks and how they can be mitigated. We’re honored to work with the American Cancer Society on this special program.”
As part of its ongoing commitment to serve its everyday heroes and local communities, Vector Solutions launched the Vector Cares program. This initiative, among others, are part of Vector Solutions’ efforts to combine business and philanthropic practices to provide education resources and improve outcomes for organizations, schools and neighborhoods.
