Orland Fire Protection District Works to Collaborate with Neighboring Departments through TargetSolutions

Orland Is Working with Other Departments in Its Region to Standardize Training in the Region Using TargetSolutions’ Online Fire Training System

Initially, the idea was for TargetSolutions to help Orland Fire Protection District solve the same challenge as it has for hundreds of other departments across the country: The consistent delivery of mandated training. But Training Officer David Piper has learned delivering online continuing education is just part of the story with TargetSolutions.

“The biggest challenge for the department was consistent delivery and tracking of training to meet regulatory requirements,” Piper said. “What TargetSolutions has done is provide a system to not only deliver training, but a way to track and meet requirements.”

Having been on the system since 2009, the 170-member department in Cook County, Ill. is now looking to TargetSolutions as a technology partner capable of helping the entire region take its training program to a new level. With TargetSolutions, Piper sees a way to standardize training, not only within his department, but throughout the region.

Orland is currently developing an enterprise site with TargetSolutions that will serve as a web-based hub for training resources with other departments in the area, including Frankfort Fire Protection District, Manhattan Fire Protection District, and New Lenox Fire Protection District. By sharing training resources, Piper believes the departments will be able to work more effectively together, save costs, and deliver better response.

“We have to depend on other departments around us to handle emergencies,” Piper said. “We’re all doing the same job as training officers, so it really helps if we’re on the same page (with TargetSolutions). It also helps us reduce the workload from an administrative standpoint if we standardize training and allows more time on drill-ground.”

By maximizing TargetSolutions’ revolutionary fire department tracking application, Credentials Manager, Orland is able to create and assign mandated training and electronic tracking reports in bundled packages. Now, managing things like job performance requirements and fire department ISO training hours is simplified.

With multiple first response teams throughout the department, it would be nearly impossible for a training officer to manage each employee’s credentials and licenses individually. This is why Piper values TargetSolutions so much, he said.

“The biggest challenge for the department was consistent delivery and tracking of training to meet regulatory requirements. What TargetSolutions has done is provide a system to not only deliver training, but a way to track and meet requirements.”

David Piper, Training Officer for Orland Fire Protection District

“So now we can say, ‘hey, these are all our requirements. Do these courses in this time period,’ and I can track the training as they complete it, and not have to come back to it,” said Piper. “This has really streamlined training for us.”

As one of the bigger, more progressive departments in the state, Orland is now reaping the benefits of TargetSolutions fire department tracking tools. But early on, when it first signed up in 2009, it took time to get the platform dialed in. Through dedication and outstanding customer support, Piper’s platform is now humming, he said.

“One of the biggest benefits of TargetSolutions is the support is awesome,” Piper said. “Receiving online support through chat or picking up the phone to talk to account representatives, they have all been phenomenal. They’ve done a great job helping us work through issues.

“TargetSolutions is really in touch with its customers. When I first started, we didn’t have a way to assign drills, and wanted to assign objectives out instead of having to enter information – a lot of information. TargetSolutions then developed the Save and Assign feature. They listened to what we wanted and adapted the platform to what we needed.”

How Fire Department Training Leaders Can Communicate More Effectively with Personnel

Communicating Effectively in Your Department
The fire service is always evolving, but good communication has always been vital to successful operations. It’s important for leaders to be specific in detailed with directions and train personnel to follow instructions to eliminate mistakes in the field.

Blog by Rich Miron of TargetSolutions

Are you communicating effectively with your team? That was the question laid out in January during Michael Daley and Ryan Pennington’s training session at Firehouse World in San Diego.

Daley of Monroe Township (New Jersey) and Pennington of Charleston Fire Department (West Virginia) teamed up to deliver a 90-minute session, Communication between the Front Seat and Jump Street. The topic originated during a casual conversation the two had one evening.

“These kids today, they just don’t understand,” Daley recalled saying. After talking it over, it was determined issues arise because of breakdowns in communication from the front seat, where Daley sits, to jump street, which is Pennington’s area.

It was an interesting topic, considering the theme of the conference: “Changing with the Fire Service.” Times are clearly changing, but communication has always been a critical component to success. Whether it was 50 years ago, 20 years ago, or today, it’s always critical for leaders to set clear expectations.

During the session, Daley conducted an interesting experiment with the room of firefighters. He gave each a piece of paper and asked everyone to follow a series of instructions. After completing the seemingly simple instructions, each firefighter delivered a different result.

“Nobody did anything wrong, you all followed the directions; the point is, everybody follows directions differently,” Daley said. “This is an example that everyone hears directions differently. That’s why we have to get everyone on the same page.”

But how do you do that is the question that leaders sitting in the front seat often struggles with, Daley said.

Here are two key steps leaders can take to improve communication in their organization:

Be More Detailed: If you’re not specific with instruction, there can be confusion that can lead to unexpected outcomes.

Increase Training Using Instructions: Make sure you receive feedback that instructions have been received and understood. “So many communication issues come from lack of training,” Daley said.

Daley outlined key traits of a leader with good communication skills: Stability, integrity, flexibility, sensitivity, and personal power.

“If you’re a leader, when you leave this profession, you’re going to ask yourself, ‘did I do everything I could?’ I want my firefighters to be better and smarter than I am.”

Michael Daley, Monroe Township (New Jersey)

Pennington then presented his perspective from “jump street,” aiming to explain how subordinate firefighters feel communication breakdowns arise. He outlined how critical it is for personnel to support the mission, respect their leaders, and function as a unit.

Good traits of a good follower are self-management, commitment, competence and courage, Pennington said.

Firefighter Training Webcast: Attack from the Burned Side

TargetSolutions is sponsoring a special webcast from Fire Engineering on Feb. 12 at 10 a.m. (PST). Please click here to register for the event.

As the fire service continues to evolve, new firefighting techniques come into play, some of which may question longstanding beliefs. One such case is new age confidence in attacking a fire from the burned side.

For years, firefighter training and operations have focused on attacking a fire from the unburned side. But this may not always be the most effective strategy. Scientific findings are helping firefighters advance their techniques and change some procedures to be more successful.

On Thursday, Feb. 12, Fire Engineering will conduct a live and free webcast at 10 a.m. (PST) that will present different tasks and tactics for extinguishing fires that originate on the exterior and extend into the attic.

Sean Gray, a lieutenant with Cobb County (Ga.) Fire and Emergency Services will use case studies and practical experience while discussing fallacies that have led to firefighter injuries and deaths.

Meet Strategic Risk Management Account Manager: Ashley Cole

Ashley hails from Santa Maria, Calif. and attended college at San Diego State University where she majored in Television, Film, and News Media. Ashley married her husband, Jeffrey Cole, an engineer with the Poway Fire Department (Calif.) in May of 2012.

Ashley loves to laugh and plays a variety of different sports. She enjoys being near the water and considers herself a “beach bum.”

Here is a Q&A from a recent conversation with Ashley.

What is your guilty pleasure?
I have to admit, I have two. Watching the Bachelor and making cakes. However, in order to make up for the brain cells lost watching the Bachelor, I recharge with answering intelligent questions watching Jeopardy.

If you had to spend a day without technology, what would you do?
If I had to spend a day without technology, it would be fine because that means I could head to the beach a lot more and paddle board.

What is your New Year’s resolution?
To be an even better me than I was the year before.

What is the first thing you remember purchasing with your own money?
My camera. I LOVE my camera!

If you could pick any age to go back to, what would it be? Why?
I would say the age I most appropriately should go back to is 24. Why you ask, well the year I graduated college and the adventure began.

What has been the most memorable/fulfilling moment in your position at TargetSolutions?
I would say the most fulfilling moment, working with my clients. Specifically, Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) and Auxiliary Organizations Risk Management Alliance (AROMA). I enjoy hearing their creative ideas and helping implement them into the TargetSolutions platform.
