Newly Updated NFPA 1 & 101 Training Series Meets Florida Firefighter Requirements

To meet these requirements, Vector Solutions developed a course series specific to these codes: NFPA 1 & 101: Modules 1-4. Available through the TargetSolutions system, the series was updated to ensure Florida firefighters are compliant with the most current version of recertification standards.

How to Manage Firefighter Training During a Pandemic

Salt Spring Island Fire Rescue

By Fire Chief Arjuna George, Salt Spring Island Fire Rescue (British Columbia, Canada)

The fire service and all of humanity have got a taste to what our new world may be like and how we will manage this life-changing pandemic (COVID-19).  As the world shifts and adjusts to this new normal, the fire service is faced with numerous unforeseen challenges.  Virtually overnight, one of the most difficult and complex problems the fire service faced was how to maintain their organization’s training competencies during the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Firefighters are innovators and great problem solvers. We do not roll over when faced with adversity; we solve diverse issues with our can-do attitudes.  This pandemic has brought upon the world much anxiety and pain, but it has also created golden opportunities for growth and has forced us to be creative and resourceful in all we do.  Response protocols to fire and medical alarms changed overnight but we remained operational and ready to serve our communities 24/7. However, for many departments, in-person training abruptly ended for months on end.

Online training and video conferencing turned into the only option for most North American Fire Services and it worked. It worked so well that many organizations are still using these technological tools today after the restrictions have been eased.

San Antonio Fire Department Leverages Online Platform to Streamline Training Management

San Antonio Fire DepartmentWhen the San Antonio Fire Department made the decision to move its old learning management system to something better, more modern, their selection of TargetSolutions’ Learning Management System (LMS) was the first step into a period of information, communication, and training enlightenment.

“It was a game changer for us,” said Captain Dean Watson, Training Coordinator for the San Antonio Fire Department.  “Our old LMS was centralized in the Fire Training Division and we had to rely on the Training Coordinator to pull reports.”

Captain Watson said that before going to TargetSolutions the previous department LMS had a limited capacity and recorded just continuing education units. There wasn’t the ability to capture training and share information in realtime to multiple groups.

“We were using the company logbook, or a spreadsheet,” said Captain Watson. “TargetSolutions allows us to build and deliver training content, document individual, company, and battalion-level training, and make it all available to be seen by everyone without having a big paper trail.”

Numbers. Data. Statistics.

Many of us cringe at simply hearing those words. However, in the fire service these are important for us to do our job.
